New Champions and Records Set at Aintree's Showing Show

A new British Side-Saddle Show Jumping Record was set during Aintree’s annual Showing Show at the weekend, which may also be making its way into the World Record Books.

Susan Oakes from County Meade in Ireland travelled over to the competition, which was staged in the Aintree Equestrian Centre and together with her mount, Brandy & Red, set a new British side saddle jumping record of 5ft 8 ¼ inches.  Remarkably, Susan, who hunts side-saddle, has only being Show Jumping for 8 weeks before the competition.

Other weekend highlights, which saw over £4,000 given away in prize money, included Monet’s Garden taking part in his first showing show since retirement.  The popular Grey is no stranger to the Aintree course having won three, Old Roan Chases. Owner David Wesley-Yates was present to see the horse, whose career earnings totalled over £650,000, compete for the Retrained Racehorse Championship. However, it was to be Lynn Russell’s mount, Stealth Project who picked up the £1,000 prize for the Retrained Racehorse class.

Out of the 1,200 entries and 350 classes, the Supreme Champion was crowned on Sunday and went to Cheshire based Megan Cookson with Lovaine Rooney who also won the Intermediate show horse earlier in the day.

Commenting on the second Aintree Showing Show success, Carly Goodall, Show organiser said: “We received some fantastic support from competitors and spectators over the weekend for what was only our second showing show.  The backdrop of the iconic Aintree course made for a very special environment in which to compete and we witnessed some very worthy winners.”
