Paralympic Gold Medal-Winner Joins The Ideal Team

Walsall-based saddle manufacturer, The Ideal Saddle Company, has welcomed Paralympic  team gold medal-winner, Deb Criddle, onto its team of sponsored riders.

Deb lost the use of her right arm and sustained serious injuries to her right leg following a motorcycle accident in 1985 and eventually had to have her arm amputated in 2003. As a result she competes at dressage in the Grade III Paralympic classification. 2012 was her fourth Paralympic Games where she won three medals riding The Lady Joseph Trust’s LJT Akilles.

Deb brought along her medals and spent a morning at the Ideal factory, enjoying a tour round the site and seeing the various techniques and processes involved in making the bespoke saddle she competed on and also the special bridle which was created by Carolyn Truss. Dressage rider, Daniel Odell also attended.

Said Liz Leggett of Ideal Saddles: “We are very proud to have Deb joining the team of riders that we support and we had a wonderful time when she visited the factory. She spoke to everyone and let them try on her medals and take photos. Her visit has left an amazing feeling in the workshops and is still being talked about!”

Said Deb: “The Ideal Saddle Company has been absolutely fantastic in listening to my particular requirements for a saddle. Having only one hand, I often struggle to lift a saddle onto a horse’s back so the new saddle design was created to weigh a third less and has taken a lot of pressure off of my arm.  I was also looking for a saddle that would enable me to feel much closer to Akilles as he responds so well to seat aids.  It was one area in particular that I felt could make the difference between a medal or no medal at the Games. Ideal Saddles were willing to take one of their trees - one that I have been very impressed with on another horse - and craft a one- off bespoke saddle around it.  I am really looking forward to a continuing working relationship with the team at Ideal.”
