Rider cut from car after fall

A seemingly uninjured rider had to be freed from a car by emergency services at Misty Blue Farm in County Durham.

26 year-old Helen Mercer had fallen from her horse, Magic, during a show at the Spennymoor venue. It was reported that the horse went through the jump, sending Helen over his head, luckily the horse then jumped over her. Helen rose, appearing unhurt from the fall and turned down first aid assistance. One of the show helpers had given the rider a lift following the incident, but it became apparent that Helen was more seriously injured than originally thought.

Yorkshire Air Ambulance was called to the farm followed by the fire brigade as there were concerns that Helen had spinal injuries making it necessary to remove her from the car safely on a spinal board.

Helen was then taken to the University Hospital of North Durham where she was later discharged with a few cracked ribs, soft tissue damage and bruising on her lungs and spleen.
