Brave by name, brave by nature

Brave by name, brave by nature

When RSPCA officers were called to reports of two ponies loose on a disused golf course in May, they thought they were going to have a cat-and-mouse chase on their hands to try to round them up but they were shocked at the state of the ponies when they arrived to help.

RSPCA Inspector Nikki Cheetham said: “I was expecting the rescue to be really difficult but, as soon as we arrived at the course in Bradford it was clear these ponies wouldn’t be giving us the run-around.

“They were emaciated, weak and in a horrendous state.”

Nikki and her colleagues called a vet out to help the little ponies, found by a dog walker.

“Both of the ponies were severely underweight and incredibly weak,” Inspector Cheetham added. “And the little bay had extreme rainscald all over his body. It was the worst I’d ever seen in a horse.”

The ponies were taken to one of the RSPCA’s private boarding yards for continued treatment and rehabilitation. Here, they were named Fergus and Brave and it’s Brave who is looking for a new home for Christmas.

“Brave was such a strong and brave little pony that it seemed like an obvious name,” RSPCA equine rehoming coordinator Jacqui Wilson said.

It took months of dedication and commitment from stable workers but Brave’s skin and coat started to improve. And now, he’s barely recognisable!

When he first arrived, Brave had three shoes on overgrown feet and scarring on his withers likely from a driving harness. Now, the handsome two year old Standardbred is the picture of health and is ready to find a home of his own.

Inspector Cheetham added: “Brave looks amazing. When I first saw his transformation I felt really emotional - it’s incredible to see the difference in him.”

The gelding is expected to make between 13.2hh and 14hh.

Jacqui added: “Brave is a wonderful pony. He’s a pleasure to handle, has a lovely temperament and is easy to catch in the field.

“It would be such a wonderful end to his story to find him a loving new home in time for Christmas!”
